Basics of Eye Pattern Analysis

Network data traffic is increasing steadily due to greater numbers of Internet-connected devices such as IoT. The physical layer of optical transceiver modules used in data center equipment plays a crucial role in processing this large amount of data. Form factors such as SFP/QSFP/QSFP-DD/OSFP, etc., define a performance standard specified in the Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) using the eye pattern to assure consistency between suppliers. The sampling oscilloscope is an ideal instrument for analyzing the eye pattern of these digital signals. Using a sampling oscilloscope allows for evaluating whether the performance meets the standards' criteria. It also can measure the margin when the object under test conforms to the performance standard and analyze the cause when it does not.
