Deploying Multicore Optical Fiber Systems for Data Center Interconnect

The data centers that house modern artificial intelligence (AI) factories continue to drive advancements in optical fiber’s transmission capabilities. Optical fibers are being deployed in unprecedented numbers within these data centers, and for data center operators, it is vital to be able to connect facilities to one another without compromising throughput capacity. This type of connectivity, known as data center interconnect (DCI), can be rife with challenges in part because of the sheer number of optical fibers that need to be connected, and the space they consume. One of the newest technological developments in optical fiber—multicore fiber (MCF)—delivers a solution to these challenges. But as is the case with most new technologies, MCF has a set of unique characteristics that affect its deployment.

This webcast seminar, produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance and delivered by Anritsu’s senior field applications engineering manager Daniel Gonzalez, provides insight into the deployment and use of MCF. In the webinar, Gonzalez will deliver a thorough examination of this optical fiber type, including the following.

  • The connectivity and throughput requirements of modern AI data centers compared to less-demanding user types
  • Advantages of MCF over traditional single-core fibers, including space savings, the ability to support more high-speed connections in a given pathway, and how system designers can capitalize on these capabilities
  • How the use of MCF affects performance of the most recently developed ultra-high-speed transmission technologies (ZR/ZR+/OpenZR)
  • Why crosstalk (NEXT and FEXT) is a consideration with MCF
  • Real-world performance measurements taken from the field that illustrate how deployment and installation affect performance
