Defined in 3GPP’s Release 18, 5G Advanced will enhance existing network performance and support new use cases which will act as building blocks for the 6G ecosystem. Many 5G networks are being deployed across the world, the 5G advanced era will see new use cases, including Intelligent Network Automation, Extended Reality (XR), Reduced Capability NR Devices (RedCap), and Network Energy Savings. These use cases will usher in the 6G era, with XR gradually evolving to enable immersive human-machine communications, and RedCap devices utilizing energy from its surroundings and inputting them into digital twins. With this in mind, what investments should operators be making now to ensure the 5G Advanced use cases are fully in place and to get ahead of the game in laying the groundwork for 6G?
